As 2013 nears the end, I thought I would pick my favourite 10 photos that I’ve taken throughout the year. In no particular order…
1. Corn Du and Pen y Fan from Upper Neuadd Reservoir
January 16th: This was my first trip out for a while and I was so blown away by the light and the scene that I spent over an hour on this spot! What caught my eye was the ice that was vaguely shaped like the British Isles.
2. Three Cliffs Bay
January 24th: For years I have been wanting to photograph Three Cliffs Bay in the snow so when it snowed, it was my location of choice. Stood on the cliffs, the sky was cloudy and it looked like that sunrise wouldn’t happen. After much procrastinating, I headed onto the beach – imagine my surprise when the whole sky lit up! I was the wrong side of Pennard Pill so threw caution to the wind and waded across the river despite the cold and ran around like a mad thing trying to get the best composition. I needn’t have worried, this was taken 30 minutes after sunrise! Plus my feet stayed dry!
3. Pen y Fan at Night
March 12th: This has to be my biggest photo to date. I ventured out to the Brecon Beacons to photograph it in the dark. I spent a few hours up there wearing 7 layers on top! Back home, I posted it on Facebook. I was blown away when I ended up getting around 8000 likes, several thousand shares and a few hundred comments! It is now my third best selling photo of the Brecon Beacons!
4. Three Cliffs Bay in Infrared
March 27th: Whilst running a One to One Landscape Photography Workshop, I took this photo to demonstrate what I was seeing to my client. It turned out to be my best Infrared photo to date and also one of the strongest views I have of Three Cliffs Bay.
5. Fan Brycheiniog and the PANSTARRS Comet
April 2nd: After some late snow, I headed onto the Carmarthen Fan and into the harshest conditions that I’ve ever been in. It was around -27 wind chill and whilst taking this photo, I could hear the wind coming over the ridge just in front of me and it sounded like an express train! It was an immense evening!
6. Pen y Fan and Corn Du from Craig Cerrig-gleisiad
June 26th: For years I have tried and tried to get a good photo from Craig Cerrig-gleisiad and have never achieved what I wanted. A very early 3am start got me to the top and I was rewarded with an amazing sky. I feel I have finally succeeded in taking a photo here that does the area justice!
7. Worms Head and Rhossili Bay
August 13th: This photo was shot whilst on a trip out with my close friend, Emma. I used a 10-stop filter to slow down the exposure to add mood. Although we got frozen despite the time of year, it was still a very enjoyable trip out with good company.
8. The Road by Broad Pool
October 10th: This was a tricky photo to get due to the amount of traffic and it took several goes. I particularly like that the Milky Way is visible even though the moon was out and that the road leads you straight to them
9. Roundstone Bay
November 31st: My wife, children and parents spent a very enjoyable week west of Galway in Ireland. Driving back to the cottage we had rented in Roundstone, I spotted this rainbow so pulled over and grabbed a few shots.
10. Mumbles Lighthouse
I wanted to try shooting this location at night but I had real problems with my shadow from the street lights behind me. At the end of the shoot, I composed this photo and set a series of exposures going to see if it would work and then I would come back later when it was dark – it was starting to get light. However, the approaching dawn has added some lovely colour to the sky and as a result I think the photo works really well!
There you go, I hope you enjoyed my selection. I have a lot planned for next year so will hopefully be able to present a very different 10 photos this time next year. In the meantime, I hope you all have a good Christmas and New Year :-)
