I recently headed out to Rhossili to see if the heather on the Down was photographing – it’s safe to say that it was! I’ve been meaning to take this photo for 5 years!

Can Black and White Rescue a Photo?
Earlier in the summer, we went for a walk along Rhossili when I spotted a clump of flowers so whilst everyone else carried on walking, I took a couple of photos. The weather wasn’t great and the lighting flat so the resultant colour image wasn’t great. In an attempt to get a usable photo I tried converting it to black and white.

I think I prefer the black and white conversion. Any comments on which you prefer gratefully received :-)

Worms Head on Gower
I’ve just had the preliminary flick through this month’s copy of Outdoor Photography and saw that they’ve featured my website in theie On the Web section, and a very good write up it is so thank you Outdoor Photography :-) This made me think that I ought to update my blog as I haven’t posted for a few days. It’s currently August, and I don’t much like August and don’t really go out and take new photos. Locations are packed with people, traffic can be a pain and kids are running around – I prefer to be on my own, or at least one of a couple of people, on location. And I also have my exhibition coming up later this month which I have to prepare for and print, mount and frame photos. Here’s a sneak preview of a photo that will be in the exhibition (26th-30th August, Ostreme Centre Minor Hall in Mumbles, Swansea). I took it in May 2005 but was never happy with the result. Given 5 years more experience in processing photos, improved software and some new Digital Asset Management software (I’d forgotten about the photo) I have reprocessed it. Some surfers were a little concerned when I took this photo as it appeared I was peaking through the grass at them!

Rhossili Bay
I managed a quick trip out last night, possibly my last for a while as Paula is due to go into labour today – and it’s nothing to do with politics… I nipped out to Rhossili Bay as the tide forecast was OK as was the weather forecast. It was pretty windy though. When I went to photograph the Helvetia Wreck last time at sunset, another photographer had the spot but this time it was free. I took a couple of shots, but had been hoping the water would be lapping around it. I then went down to the water’s edge to have a play with my 10 stop ND filter, but as it turned out just a polariser gave a better shot.

Worms Head
I went out for sunset to Worms Head on Thursday evening. There were no clouds in the sky, but I managed to come away with a nice, clean image. I had wanted to photograph the Helvetia wreck, but another photographer had nabbed the spot so I headed down to the waterline.

New Gower Mono Collection
I’ve been meaning to do this for a while and when Willow was sick last week I couldn’t go out so had time to make a small collection of black and white photos of Gower. I’m taking them to Inspirations in Swansea today where they will be on sale. The photo below doesn’t really do them justice – they look stunning, even though I say so myself.

Gower Mono Collection
The photos are of Arthur’s Stone, Whiteford Lighthouse, Worms Head, Mumbles Lighthouse and Three Cliffs Bay (Left to right; top to bottom). They measure 10×10 inches and cost £20 each.

New Rhossili and Worms Head Photos
Having been bitten by the bug for star trail photograpy, last night the moon and weather tied up nicely so there would be minimal cloud and no moon – perfect for star trail photography. I took myself, two cameras, food and my tent up onto Rhossili Down. I took my tent to keep me warm as the forecast was for 5 degrees C – it’s a great tent – two poles and for pegs and it’s up, plus it’s good in storms and snow too and weighs next to nothing – it’s the MacPac Minaret if you’re interested. Anyway, it was a great location apart from being on the side of the hill – literally as the tent was at quite an angle! I took several photos, so here they are:

Llangennith Beach and Burry Holms (Canon EOS 5D)

Rhossili and Worms Head (Canon EOS 5D)

Worms Head (Canon EOS 5D Mark II)
And finally the star trails photo – this is an hour photo and the wide angle shows the stars that circle both the north and south pole.
