Heather at Rhossili

Tags: , , , , , , , , , — Dan Santillo @ 7:08 am

I recently headed out to Rhossili to see if the heather on the Down was photographing – it’s safe to say that it was! I’ve been meaning to take this photo for 5 years!

Rhossili Bay and Helvetia Wreck

Tags: , , , , , , — Dan Santillo @ 11:19 am

After a lot of rain, the weather finally improved so I drove to Rhossili yesterday afternoon with the aim of adding to my new collection of panoramas that are wider than the eye can see. I’ve got 3 or 4 new ones, but have only processed one so far. They take quite a bit of processing power – this photo is comprised of fourteen 21 megapixel images! The final image is 1.4 metres at 300dpi which means the detail in the photo is incredible.

Worms Head on Gower

Tags: , , , — Dan Santillo @ 1:12 pm

I’ve just had the preliminary flick through this month’s copy of Outdoor Photography and saw that they’ve featured my website in theie On the Web section, and a very good write up it is so thank you Outdoor Photography :-) This made me think that I ought to update my blog as I haven’t posted for a few days. It’s currently August, and I don’t much like August and don’t really go out and take new photos. Locations are packed with people, traffic can be a pain and kids are running around – I prefer to be on my own, or at least one of a couple of people, on location. And I also have my exhibition coming up later this month which I have to prepare for and print, mount and frame photos. Here’s a sneak preview of a photo that will be in the exhibition (26th-30th August, Ostreme Centre Minor Hall in Mumbles, Swansea). I took it in May 2005 but was never happy with the result. Given 5 years more experience in processing photos, improved software and some new Digital Asset Management software (I’d forgotten about the photo) I have reprocessed it. Some surfers were a little concerned when I took this photo as it appeared I was peaking through the grass at them!

Rhossili Bay

Tags: , , , , — Dan Santillo @ 9:24 am

I managed a quick trip out last night, possibly my last for a while as Paula is due to go into labour today – and it’s nothing to do with politics… I nipped out to Rhossili Bay as the tide forecast was OK as was the weather forecast. It was pretty windy though. When I went to photograph the Helvetia Wreck last time at sunset, another photographer had the spot but this time it was free. I took a couple of shots, but had been hoping the water would be lapping around it. I then went down to the water’s edge to have a play with my 10 stop ND filter, but as it turned out just a polariser gave a better shot.

A Story of Working on Snowy Gower

Tags: , , , , — Dan Santillo @ 12:40 pm

A few weeks ago snow was forecast, so I got up at 5am, cleared 4 inches of snow from the car and left the house at 5:45am. My plan was to reach the other side of Swansea before rush hour kicked off and everyone panicked about the snow. I only slid once – down a steep hill on ice, but managed to slow to 5mph before coming out of the juction without being able to stop (I just shoved it into 2nd and then 1st gear so the engine slowed the car). The rest of the journey in the snow was fine, apart from the idiot in the Renault who drove up very fast behind me and then swerved to over take – and the Royal Mail lorry who got very close (one of the main reasons the country grinds to a halt in the snow is very few people know how to drive in snow – I saw one car in the hedge that shouldn’t have slid in the first place!). I got to Pennard in good time and realised I’d left my tripod at home. Annoyed with myself, I set out into the pitch black across Pennard golf course to Pennard Castle where I balanced the camera on my bag to take the following photo.

I then walked to overlook Three Cliffs Bay, but it was so windy that without my tripod I couldn’t get a decent photo. I decided to wait for sunrise, but then it started to snow heavily. I sat in the dunes and got snowed on, then walked down to the beach and still got snowed on. The photo below was taken in a brief respite when it just snowed hard before switching back to heavy.

Eventually, I gave up and went back to the car for a cup of coffee. Finally, the snow stopped and I walked all the way back to my viewpoint only to find the tide had covered the snow on the beach and it was very windy, which made it difficult to take photos. I took several, the one below being the best. The horizon may not look straight, but that’s the cloud creating that effect.

In an effort to get a decent photo, I drove in the snow to Rhossili and Worm’s Head. It wasn’t snowing, which was good, so I walked down the path. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any snow on Worm’s Head. Suddenly, the sun came out, lit up Rhossili Bay very nicely and I was finally able to get a photo that I’m very happy with before going home.
