When my parents were visiting last week, I took them for a walk to Paviland Cave. Unfortunately, the low tide wasn’t low enough and we couldn’t cross the beach to get to the cave. Here are some photos I took whilst we were waiting…

Paviland Cave on Gower
Paviland Cave is where the remains of the ‘Red Lady of Paviland’ were discovered. ‘She’ was originally thought to be a Roman female, as the bones were dyed with red ochre and accompanied by grave goods. However, it was later discovered that ‘she’ was a stone age male, but the name of Red Lady has stuck. It was thought for many years that the Red Lady was from around 24,000BC, but the bones were recently re-examined and discovered to be older. At the time of the ritual burial, about 29,000 years ago, the landscape was very different. Sea level was lower, so the cave would have provided views over grassland rich in game. A replica of the Red Lady is on display in Swansea Museum.
Today we had a fantastic walk from Port-Eynon to see the original resting place of the oldest human bones discovered in the UK.

Pre-Sunrise Three Cliffs Bay Panorama
I’m finally catching up on my photo processing of the recent shoots. Here’s an early photo of Three Cliffs Bay with the moon still up, just before the sun rose. You can click on the image to see it much larger.

Panorama of Mewslade Bay on Gower
After seeing sunrise at Fall Bay, I walked on to Mewslade Bay. This was a far more challenging panorama to shoot as the waves were coming in quicky and it’s easy to get the waves split between frames so they don’t stitch very well. I took several to make sure I got it right – I filled a 2Gb flash card in four minutes! You can click on the image to see it large…

Fall Bay Panorama
The weather this week has been pretty bad with rain and strong wind so when there was a chance of good weather on Thursday, I headed out to Fall Bay (just around the corner from Rhossili) for sunrise. It turned out to be the most intense sunrise I’ve seen! Click on the panorama to see it bigger.
After the sun had risen, I walked around to the other side of Fall Bay. Seeing a good opportunity for another photo, I walked along a precarious sheep path on the cliff and took this photo:

Langland Bay and Caswell Bay
With the weather being mostly pouring rain this week, I headed out on the only good half day that was forecast and was joined by Paula and Piran. We parked at Langland Bay and walked to Caswell Bay, stopping to take photos along the way. We even discovered a new path that took us above Caswell Bay so we could look down on the beach! I’ve always struggled to get a good photo of Caswell Bay, but think I might finally be happy with the one below. Both of these are shown in the aspect ratio for my new 100x40cm framed photos which cannot be ordered online as they’re too big to send through the post – please contact me for further details.

Langland Bay Panorama
With the prospect of heavy rain all week next week, I made sure I went out this morning to take advantage of sunrise. The tide was perfect for Langland Bay, so I got there at 7:25am, found my location and stood drinking coffee and watching the sea getting ever closer to cutting me off. I had to wait a little longer due to a cloud bank obscuring the rising sun which meant I had to dash around the rocks between waves to get back to the beach! Here is the resultant panorama – it’s also available as a framed 100x40cm panorama; please contact me for details.
